You’ve received a warning letter...now what?

You were sent an Air District warning letter because a vehicle registered in your name was reported as emitting excessive exhaust smoke.

Next steps

  1. If you own this vehicle, please have it checked and repaired or retired. Vehicles emitting visible exhaust for more than 10 seconds can be fined up to $250; however, this warning letter is not a violation and will not affect your DMV driving record.
  2. To help you to avoid future fines, BAR offers financial assistance programs to help you repair or retire your smoking vehicle. For more information on program benefits and eligibility, Connect to Assistance Programs.
  3. Once action is taken, please complete and return the enclosed questionnaire in the paid postage envelope or use your six-digit user ID Number to complete the questionnaire online.

Incorrect license plate numbers occasionally cause false reports. If your vehicle does not smoke, was not at the reported location, or if you sold the vehicle, please let us know by completing the questionnaire so we can update our records. Thank you very much.
